This process is crucial in many industrial applications, laboratories and in the production of high quality drinking water.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Demineralisation methods<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The main water <\/span><b>demineralisation methods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> include the following.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ion exchange<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Cation exchange resins:<\/strong> remove cations (positive ions) such as calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) by replacing them with hydrogen ions (H+).<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Anionic exchange resins:<\/strong> they remove anions (negative ions) such as chlorides (Cl-), sulphates (SO42-), nitrates (NO3-) and bicarbonates (HCO3-) by replacing them with hydroxide ions (OH-).<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Mixed bed resins work in pairs:<\/strong> the cationic resin removes the cations and the anionic resin removes the anions, combining H+ and OH- to form pure water (H2O).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Reverse osmosis (RO)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Uses semi-permeable membranes<\/strong> to remove most salts and minerals. Water is pushed through the membrane, separating it from contaminants.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Reverse osmosis is particularly effective in<\/strong> reducing dissolved substances, bacteria, and other micro-contaminants present in water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Electrodeionization (EDI)<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Combines electrolysis and ion exchange to remove residual ions. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EDI uses electric current to continuously regenerate ion exchange resins, eliminating the need for chemical regeneration.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Applications for demineralization<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Pharmaceutical industry:<\/strong> production of ultra-pure water for pharmaceutical formulations and laboratory preparations.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Power plants:<\/strong> treatment of boiler feed water to prevent scale and corrosion.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Food and beverage industry:<\/strong> production of water used in beverages and foods, where high purity water is required.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Electronics and semiconductors:<\/strong> production of ultra-pure water used in the manufacture of electronic components and semiconductors.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Research laboratories:<\/strong> supply of deionised water for experiments and analyses requiring water without
